New Zealand summerfruit levy vote and board changes

As the second half of 2025 begins, Summerfruit NZ has outlined two key developments for the sector: the 2025 Summerfruit Commodity Levy referendum and proposed changes to the Summerfruit Exporters Committee (SEC).

The 2025 Summerfruit Commodity Levy referendum opened on 4 August and will close on 25 August. The commodity levy accounts for more than 80% of Summerfruit NZ's annual income. The referendum proposes continuing the current levy structure without changes. Summerfruit NZ has urged all growers to vote, noting that without levy funding, the organisation could not operate as it currently does. Voting papers have been sent to growers, and those who have not received them are asked to contact Summerfruit NZ's Communications Manager.

At the SEC's Annual General Meeting in April 2025, members unanimously approved motions to disestablish the organisation, with the intention that its core functions be transferred to Summerfruit NZ. This is contingent upon agreements being reached, including formalising a minimum of two board positions for exporter members, managing annual market monitoring, maintaining current SEC objectives, ensuring management of exporter interests within the Horticultural Export Authority framework, negotiating a new export membership fee that covers market monitoring, and deciding on the use of SEC reserves.

To integrate SEC functions, Summerfruit NZ will make minor amendments to its constitution. The Board will also propose adjustments to clarify membership categories. These changes will not alter how Summerfruit NZ operates or how levy funds are invested. Export-specific functions will continue to be funded through separate exporter fees, with income from each source ring-fenced for its designated use.

The SEC's objectives—promoting unity and cooperation, engaging with growers, and fostering new export markets—are aligned with those of Summerfruit NZ. No changes in strategic focus are anticipated. Full details of the proposed constitutional changes will be provided to members ahead of the Annual General Meeting in November.
