Quetta Airport to launch international cargo for perishables

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has announced the initiation of international cargo services at Quetta International Airport, with an initial focus on perishable goods. This development was disclosed during a meeting between CAA officials and representatives from the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI). Plans are in place to establish a dedicated international cargo terminal.

Officials from CAA, including Senior Additional Director Faheem Yaar Khan, Senior Joint Director (Planning & Development) Architect Usama Khan, and Manager Waheed Abbas, stated that the new cargo service will commence with perishable items such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat. This initiative aims to assist farmers and businesses in Balochistan, who face challenges with inadequate road infrastructure, limited transport options, and the lack of direct export routes.

QCCI President Haji Muhammad Ayub Miriani, along with Senior Vice President Haji Akhtar Kakar and Vice President Engineer Mir Wais Khan Kakar, expressed approval of the announcement. They noted the challenges local exporters face, such as the need to send goods to Karachi for international shipping, even for nearby destinations like Dubai. The absence of a direct cargo facility in Quetta has impeded the region's agricultural and livestock sectors, increasing export costs and reducing efficiency.

The Chamber emphasized that a robust international cargo service would support the local business community and benefit neighboring Afghanistan. They highlighted that despite discussions on boosting exports, the lack of concrete action has hindered the region's economic growth.

CAA officials reassured the QCCI that establishing the new cargo terminal at Quetta International Airport is a priority. Negotiations with the Pakistan Air Force to acquire the necessary land for the terminal are underway. Officials noted that increased cargo operations at the airport could make air travel more affordable for businesses and the general public.

The initial focus on perishable goods aligns with the needs of Balochistan's farmers and exporters. The cargo service is expected to expand to include other products over time, providing comprehensive support for the region's trade and export sector.

At the meeting's conclusion, the QCCI presented a souvenir shield to the visiting CAA officials, acknowledging their efforts to enhance Quetta's connectivity and support the local economy.
