U.S. vegetable availability falls to 376 lb in 2024

U.S. per capita availability of vegetables and pulses has experienced a steady decline over the past few decades, reaching its lowest point in more than 35 years in 2024. According to data from the USDA Economic Research Service, preliminary figures for 2024 show that the average American had access to just 376 pounds of vegetables and pulses, down significantly from the 1996 peak of 426 pounds per person.

During the late 1990s, availability remained relatively high, fluctuating slightly but staying above 420 pounds per capita. However, a downward trend began in the early 2000s, with notable dips between 2002 and 2005. Although there were modest rebounds in select years, such as 2010 and 2018, these gains were not sustained.

From 2010 onward, the data show a mix of slight increases and declines, reflecting inconsistent consumption and production trends. The brief recovery around 2018 and 2019 brought per capita availability back near 410 pounds, but this was followed by renewed drops in 2020 and 2021. Although 2022 saw a small uptick, the levels never returned to the early 2000s range.

The sharp decline to 376 pounds in 2024 marks a concerning shift, suggesting changing dietary patterns, possible supply chain disruptions, or reduced interest in vegetable and pulse consumption. Analysts may point to increased processed food intake, inflationary pressures, or shifting agricultural priorities as contributing factors. With 2024's preliminary numbers setting a multi-decade low, the data underscores the need for renewed focus on vegetable and pulse promotion within public health and nutrition strategies.
