Mission Produce, Inc., a U.S.-based company involved in sourcing, producing, and distributing Hass avocados, has officially opened its new packinghouse in Guatemala. The facility is part of the company's strategy to expand its global sourcing network and improve year-round supply capabilities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on April 24, 2025, attended by Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo and U.S. Ambassador Tobin Bradley.
The new facility is intended to enhance supply continuity and quality control for markets in the UK, Europe, and eventually the United States. Guatemala's role in Mission Produce's supply chain is considered strategic due to its geographic position, two annual harvests, and potential to bridge seasonal gaps in global avocado availability.
"This investment strengthens our ability to serve key markets and meet growing demand," said Steve Barnard, CEO of Mission Produce. "Guatemala's conditions make it a strong addition to our sourcing portfolio."
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo highlighted the facility's contribution to the country's economy. "This investment adds value to national production and supports a more competitive and inclusive economic model," he said. According to Arévalo, avocado exports in 2024 generated approximately Q120.7 million ($15.5 million) and supported over 6,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
U.S. Ambassador Tobin Bradley emphasized Guatemala's potential role in meeting rising U.S. demand for avocados. "With continued collaboration and high standards, Guatemala is well-positioned to take advantage of this opportunity," he said.
Mission Produce's packinghouse is expected to begin operations in August 2025. It includes quality assurance and food safety features such as automated grading systems and precision temperature management, designed to maintain product quality during transport and storage.
The company has been operating in Guatemala since 2020, beginning with a long-term lease of the Cerro Redondo avocado farm. As of late 2024, 728 hectares had been planted, with plans to expand to 1,000 hectares and reach full production by 2026.
Juan Rodolfo Wiesner, President of Mission Produce South and Central America, noted that the company's operations in Guatemala are modeled on its integration strategies in Peru. The company has also spent several years developing partnerships with local growers to support the export of Guatemalan avocados to global markets.
