Is the craze for Dubai chocolate responsible for a pistachio shortage?

The pistachio-filled chocolate launched in Dubai went viral a few months ago on TikTok. Today, the demand is so high that pistachio prices have risen by almost 35%, and stocks are dwindling.

Created by a chocolate maker in 2021 in the United Arab Emirates, it was not until late 2023 that the Dubai chocolate was spotted by an influencer who filmed herself tasting it, according to BFM TV. Her video has more than 120 million views, and everyone wants some, but this chocolate is only available in the UAE.

In an attempt to ride the wave, brands from all over the world have decided to launch their own versions of the famous Dubai Chocolate. As a result, pistachio prices have soared, from 7.65 USD a pound (about 454 g) a year ago to 10.30 USD a pound today.

Pistachio stocks are also dwindling, even though last year's harvest in the USA, the leading producer and exporter, was down.
