Canary Islands avocado granted PGI status

On April 22nd, the Official Journal of the European Union published the registration of the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Aguacate de Canarias", designed to protect avocados grown on the Spanish archipelago of the Canary Islands.

"The varieties included in this designation are: Hass, Fuerte, Orotava, Pinkerton, Reed, and Carmen, each with distinct physical, chemical, and organoleptic characteristics. They are all characterized by their creamy pulp and a slightly herbaceous flavor with nutty notes due to the influence of the volcanic soils and the climate, which favors slow ripening of the fruit on the tree," according to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture.
