Kashmir apple exports reach 1,900 metric tonnes, earning $1.44 billion

Exports of Kashmir apples have reached 1,900 metric tonnes, generating over $1.44 billion in revenue from January 2024 to January 2025. Sopore Fruit Mandi, Asia's largest fruit market, contributed 900 metric tonnes, valued at $720 million.

Enhanced road connectivity has facilitated the efficient transport of apples. Fayaz Ahmed Malik, President of the Sopore Fruit Growers Association, noted, "For the first time, our apples reached their destinations on time, resulting in better prices." He reported that 25,000 trucks from Sopore Mandi have been dispatched nationwide, with some stock in cold storage being gradually shipped.

The travel time from Sopore to Jammu has been reduced to five hours due to new infrastructure. Bashir Ahmed Basheer, President of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers and Dealers Association, confirmed timely deliveries, stating, "Timely transportation was our primary demand, and this season has been a breakthrough." The total export value exceeded $1.44 billion, with some stock still in cold storage.

Despite the export success, growers are concerned about a dry spell affecting future yields. Basheer warned that insufficient snowfall and rainfall could reduce orchard moisture levels, impacting tree health and fruit quality. He emphasized the need for government intervention with irrigation support and contingency plans. Basheer also called for intensified checks on fake pesticides in the market.
