"Avocados are becoming increasingly popular across Europe, although growth differs from country to country. Spain leads in household avocado consumption, purchasing the most avocados each year. Meanwhile, Italy is an emerging market that continues to expand annually. Italy offers numerous opportunities with great potential," says Elena Rogojnikova of The Greenery. "A shift toward healthier lifestyles and a reduction in meat consumption also play a key role in the growing demand for avocados. After all, they serve as a nutritious and flavorful alternative to meat."
"This season, Colombia began with higher volumes, leading to a significant drop in the price of Hass avocados. Towards the end of the year, supplies from Peru remained modest, with Europe remaining the primary and largest market. In Peru, avocado prices declined due to lower European demand and increasing competition from other exporting countries. Meanwhile, prices in Chile remained stable, supported by strong global demand during the holiday season and a limited supply," says the buyer.
Growing production in South Africa and Spain
"Avocado production is increasing in both South Africa and Spain. In Spain, Greenskin avocado production is declining, while Hass avocado production is rising due to the establishment of new orchards. However, Spain faces growing competition from Morocco. Kenya, on the other hand, experienced export challenges last season due to geopolitical tensions and logistical delays," Elena explains.
"The Israeli Greenskin season started this year with a large supply of Ettinger avocados, primarily in smaller sizes. This was followed by Pinkerton avocados, also mostly on the smaller side. In the coming weeks, the proportion of small Pinkerton avocados is expected to decrease, with more larger sizes becoming available. From weeks 8-9, Pinkerton volumes will gradually decline, with arrivals expected in weeks 10-11. The first Fuerte avocados from South Africa are anticipated in week 11."
"South African Maluma Hass avocados are set to arrive in week 13 this year, with significantly better quality expectations than in 2024. The Israeli Hass season will continue through April, with the usual distribution of sizes. After several dry weeks, rain is expected next week, which will benefit the quality of Hass avocados. Colombia's avocado season is coming to an end, while Morocco presents a strong alternative, offering a wide range of larger-sized avocados," Elena concludes.
