This season, California isn't expecting to see as sizable a persimmons crop as it did last year. "This year, the heat is taking a toll on the persimmon fields," says Steve Matych of Regatta Tropicals. "There are some trees with a lot of small fruit and other trees look pretty good so it's hard to say."
Last year's persimmon crop, which had good-sized fruit throughout the season, was one of the largest seen in recent years. "This year we'll likely see more small fruit than large fruit but there will be good volumes on all sizes," he says, adding that it ships both the Hachiya and Fuyu varieties, though by far, Fuyus are the more popular variety. (It also ships organic persimmons of both varieties.)
Regional production
In California, Regatta Tropicals's production of persimmons starts in Wasco and next week, production in Fresno will begin. Most of the Central Valley will start at the end of the month. Harvest began on time and should go until around Thanksgiving.
As for the demand for persimmons? "Demand feels good. Chain stores and wholesale markets know that it's a really nice item for fall and we're seeing a lot of interest," says Matych. "It's an item that is growing in popularity every year."
Meanwhile pricing on the fruit has started out stronger this year, as it generally does at the start of every season.
