In the first seven months, Vietnam observed an uptick in durian exports to markets including Thailand, Hong Kong, and South Korea, with increases in double digits year-on-year. China continues to lead as the primary market, with exports escalating by nearly 53% to US$1.47 billion, which represents 92% of total durian shipments. Thailand followed, with exports valued at $65 million, marking a 51% increase, and Hong Kong at $19 million, up by 24%. Additional markets such as South Korea, Papua New Guinea, Japan, and Cambodia also saw exports surge by at least 50%. The overall export value of durian from Vietnam rose by 50% to $1.6 billion.
Ngo Tuong Vy, CEO of Chanh Thu, highlighted the competitive pricing of Vietnamese durian compared to those from Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines, noting a 30% increase in her company's exports due to decreased Thai production caused by adverse weather conditions. Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruits & Vegetables Association, attributed the growing international demand for Vietnamese durian to its high quality and year-round availability. He also mentioned that the recent protocol on frozen durian exports between Vietnam and China is expected to further enhance export figures. Last year, Vietnam's durian exports amounted to $2.3 billion, with China accounting for 90% of these exports.
