The Chinese market’s admission of yellow dragon fruit from Ecuador this year presents the South American country with a great opportunity to boost their exports. Gabriela Vallejo, who calls herself the Tropical Queen and head of sales for Ecuafields, a producer and exporter from Ecuador says: “The admission of yellow dragon fruit (pitahaya) to the Chinese market this year represents a significant achievement and a potential boost to the industry's exports.”
“This achievement not only benefits the Ecuadorian economy by opening up new export opportunities, but also allows Chinese consumers to enjoy a wider variety of high-quality fruit options. It's a positive step forward for international trade and agricultural cooperation between Ecuador and China. Our yellow dragon fruit harvest season just started and we will have an important volume until January. However, due to weather, the volumes are nowhere close to last year’s so we expect the prices will remain high and steady throughout these months. As for our other exotic fruits like granadilla, red dragon fruit and baby banana we will have availability every week of the year, hence providing consistency and good fruit selection for our programs,” explains Vallejo.
Ecuafields is a family-owned and operated produce company based in Riobamba, Ecuador since 2017. They specialize in tropical fruit: Yellow Dragon Fruit, Red Dragon Fruit, Baby Bananas, and Granadilla. The company is Global Gap and Grasp certified. They currently export to China, Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, Holland, France and the U.S. Their brands are Tropical Queen, Utopia and Amazon Pelican.
The Ecuafields yellow dragon fruit farm is located in Palora, in the Amazon Region of Ecuador. “We own 50 Hectares of land of which six hectares are in production and we expect by 2028 to grow up to 20 Hectares in production of yellow dragon fruit. Our annual production is 20,000 Kg per hectare a year and thanks to the good agricultural practices and technology 90% of our production is export quality,” states Vallejo.
She says Ecuafields will be exhibiting at Fruit Attraction in Madrid this year: “It is a fantastic opportunity for us to connect with professionals from all around the world in the fruit industry. We’re eager to learn from our experiences, share insights and explore potential collaborations.”
