According to Amine Bennani, the president of the Moroccan Association of Berry Producers, Morocco exported 157,616 tons of fresh and processed berries in the first four months of this year, i.e., 28% less than in the same period of the previous year, due to competition from the Egyptian market and unfavorable weather conditions.
Bennani said this drop was in part due to the fierce competition from Egypt, especially in the frozen product which is exported between March and October, as well as the instability of the European market, the main destination for Moroccan berries.
Blueberry and strawberry exports experienced the biggest contractions, as they fell by 79% and 62%, respectively, because their production was affected by weather issues, such as the high temperatures there were in the country in October, Bennani stated.
