According to the Executive Committee of ASAJA Cuenca, the latest storms have caused losses in garlic plantations. As detailed by the Secretary General of ASAJA Cuenca, Manuel Torrero, the storms affected the crops that were already cut and grouped for harvest, as well as the garlic that was being planted.
The garlic plantations are located in the provinces of Cuenca, Albacete, and Ciudad Real of Castilla-La Mancha. Ciudad Real was the most affected province as it received up to 150 liters of rainfall. According to Torrero, garlic producers from Cinco Casas and Argamasilla de Alba had losses of up to 90% of their plantations, while the damages in Las Pedroñeras are estimated at 50%.
“The losses in garlic cultivation this year are incalculable. There are many plots that are flooded and can't be worked. In addition, forecasts are it will continue to rain for the next few days, so producers won't even be able to enter the plantations,” stated Hector, one of the affected farmers of Las Pedroñeras.
The secretary general of ASAJA Cuenca lamented that the agricultural insurance does not even cover production costs; “many farmers are saying that the damages are not being assessed in an adjusted way.”
