As a result of falling vegetable prices on world markets, despite exporting a record volume of 1,04 billion tons in the first nine months of the current fiscal year, Pakistani revenues are in reality quite meagre. Pakistan fetched $235 million from vegetable exports during 9MFY23 compared to $240m from 675,331 tons in the corresponding period last year.
The average per-ton price (APT) in 9MFY23 dropped to $227 from $356 in the same period last fiscal year. Previously, the country exported 1,02 billion tons in the entire FY19, which fetched $234 million.
Pakistan had to import over 150,000 tons of onion (by sea and by land route) at a rate of $300 per ton from September 2022 to February 2023. This was due to crop losses caused by flash floods in Sindh and Balochistan in August 2022.
