The current tensions between Peru and Mexico might affect bilateral trade, as the latter refuses to hand over the pro tempore presidency of the Pacific Alliance to the former. Tension has been simmering since December, when Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador refused to recognize Dina Boluarte as head of state. Peru’s congress, in turn, declared López Obrador persona non grata.
Peru exported US$845mn to Mexico in 2022, up 53%. The main exports were fruits (US$97mn), copper (US$77mn), palm oil (US$64mn) and zinc (US$62mn), according to foreign trade and tourism ministry Mincetur.
