In 2022, Morocco exported more tomatoes than Spain

Morocco has exported more tomatoes than Spain for the first time ever. According to data prepared by Hortoinfo, 10 years ago Spain exported 124.74% more tomatoes than Morocco, a figure that fell to only 5.24% by 2021. Then, in 2022, Morocco exported 21.34% more tomatoes than Spain.

In 2013, Spain exported 1,026.76 million kilos of tomatoes and Morocco 457.93 million kilos. In 2021, the difference was minimal, as Spain exported 662.49 million kilos and Morocco 629.51 million. In 2022, Morocco exported 740.66 million kilos surpassing Spain, which exported 610.4 million kilos.

Exports by country in 2022
In 2022, Mexico, the Netherlands, Morocco, and Spain accounted for 60.03% of the world's total tomato exports. Mexico exported 27.84% of the total with 1,956.21 million kilos, the Netherlands 12.96% with a volume of 910.5 million, Morocco 10.54% with a total of 740.66 million, and Spain 8.69% of the world total, with 610.4 million kilos.

Revenue
In 2022, the world's tomato exports amounted to 9,829.52 million euro and were led by Mexico with 2,553.79 million euro. The Netherlands ranked second with 1,736.06 million euro. Spain ranked third with 1,076.35 million euro, and Morocco fourth with 982.32 million euro.

The order of this ranking changes when we look at the average selling price. Of the twenty largest tomato exporters in the world, Italy received the best export price in 2022: € 2.67 per kilo. It was followed by Canada with an average price of € 2.35/kg, the Netherlands with an average price of € 1.91/kg, and France with € 1.83/kg.
