According to Kees Oskam, the overall apple market has changed somewhat since spring. "In New Zealand, poor flowering and growing conditions have affected apple cultivation. South Africa's making better prices outside Europe, and Chile and Argentina are no longer as interested in Europe either. Plus, although European stocks are dwindling, plenty of local apples are still available. Regionality plays an increasingly important role, too," he says.
From now on, Jan Oskam trading company can offer a '4 pack' (73mm+). "With this, we target small households who want to spend a little more on convenience. These one or two-person homes prefer good, fresh apples that will last a week. Pre-packaged in paper, this packaging doesn't cause unwanted pollution. It also prevents people from grabbing apples off the shelf and thus prevents product loss. The cashiers need no stickers, and the margins are excellent."
This packaging will primarily focus on Bonita apples (Crisp Pink x Topaz), that has been grown and guided for several years. But Red Prince, Elstar, and Golden Delicious will also be available in this packaging. You can achieve a decent pallet load with 17 x 4-packs in a 40 x 60 cm box. "The quality's guaranteed because the apples are packed, by hand, directly from the sorting lines," Kees concludes.
