Indian ban on apple imports does not include goods from Bhutan

The Indian federal government has prohibited the import of this fruit wherever the CIF (cost, insurance, and freight) is below Rs 50 a kilogram. However, this minimum import price condition doesn't apply to the product from Bhutan.

State leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur said that the government had also imposed a 50% import duty on apple, which will take the price of cheapest imported apple to Rs 75 a kg, minus the transportation cost.

The only apple costing below Rs 50 a kg can come from Bhutan. In the last five years, 5.8 mln boxes (average 20 kg each) were produced by Himachal Pradesh in the year 2019-20.
