The German Fruit Trade Association (DFHV) has sharply criticized the EU's planned ban on fruit and vegetable packaging. "Such a ban is counterproductive, as it neither reduces food waste nor increases the shelf life of the products," explained DFHV managing director Dr. Andreas Brügger. In addition, he said, it is discriminatory if such a ban in the food sector is the only category that applies exclusively to fruit and vegetables. In the case of fruit and vegetables, packaging protects the sensitive products from damage and ensures hygiene; it extends shelf life and provides consumer information.
The DFHV naturally supports the EU's efforts to reduce packaging waste and increase recycling rates for packaging. However, the share of packaging waste from fruits and vegetables within the food industry is just below two percent, he said.
"The same EU Commission that, on the one hand, provides incentives for a sustainable and healthy diet, on the other hand, de facto creates the conditions for a sustainable food industry."
