A solution to improve Melon's port harvest profitability

“Spain produces much more than Piel de Sapo melons. There are large melon exporting companies in Almeria, Campo de Cartagena, and other areas of Murcia that also market Yellow, Galia, Charentais, and Cantaloup melons, among other varieties.

The melon's senescence process begins from the moment it is harvested and it leads to different alterations that affect the fruit's commercial quality. "The marketing companies had assumed this 'loss-of-commercial-quality-cost' because they did not have products or processes that could reduce these losses during the campaigns," they stated.

“We have demonstrated the efficacy of SaniMelon, a treatment that reduces and delays the alterations that affect the melon during its post-harvest stage and shelf life,” Sanifruit stated.

In 2021, important companies in the area of Murcia, mainly, used the SaniMelon solution at an industrial level with great results. "These companies were able to verify throughout the year and with different melon varieties that, in a normal warehouse work process, SaniMelon yielded the same results that it had in the initial demos," Sanifruit stated.

There is a certified significant increase in the percentage of marketable fruit due to different factors, such as:

  • A decrease in fruit loss
  • An improvement in the firmness of the treated melons
  • Better visual appearance than the fruit that wasn't treated
  • Less dehydration
  • Decreased spots and browning
  • Longer shelf life and better performance.

These benefits are achieved using Sanifruit's SaniMelon together with SANI-RC L, a treatment that consists of applying a natural product on the melon's surface - which helps the fruit to protect itself from external agents- and a coating that optimizes the results of the treatment.

The dilution of SaniMelon + SANI-RC L can be applied by different systems when the melons are being processed. "If the processing plant does not have an application system, we can help them with a system that can be adapted to any line and that doesn't hinder the plant's usual workflow," Sanifruit stressed.
