SAB-Almendrave celebrates the opening of the Chinese market to Spanish almonds

Annual exports of Spanish almonds to China may reach 90,000 tons in 2032

The Association of Almond and Hazelnut Exporters of Spain (SAB-Almendrave) has expressed its total satisfaction after the Government of Spain announced last week the phytosanitary protocol agreement that will allow the export of Spanish almonds to China. “According to our estimates, thanks to this historic agreement we'll be able to allocate up to 50,000 tons of almonds per year for the Chinese market, a volume that could reach up to 90,000 tons in 2032. Estimates are that the value of almond exports to China up to that date will amount to more than € 600,000,000.”

After the signing of this agreement, China becomes an important alternative for Spanish almond exports, given the European market's current state of maturity. Europe is the main destination for Spain's almonds. In fact, Europe accounted for 86% of Spanish exports, with France, Germany, and Italy as the main destinations. “The value of this agreement is twofold: firstly, we open the door to a market of 1.425 billion potential consumers, with the possibilities that this implies. Secondly, this agreement gives sustainability to the productive growth that there has been in Spain mainly due to the implementation of new irrigated farms. In 10 years, the area dedicated to almonds increased by 32% to the current 756,694 hectares,” stated Pere Ferre, the president of SAB-Almendrave.

"This consolidates the interest shown by the Chinese market and its commercial contacts with Spanish companies in recent years, based on the prestige of the quality of Spanish almond production. From a logistical point of view, Spanish almond exports to China will have a competitive advantage as exporters will take advantage of the large flow of containers returning to China from Spain due to all the exports China makes to Spain."

In April, Almendrave will hold meetings between Spanish exporters and Chinese importers, as well as a practical seminar to help Spanish exporters operate in that market.

The project has also had the valuable support of the Spanish Association of Organizations of Nut Producers (AEOFRUSE), as well as important personalities from the Ministries of Agriculture (MAPA), and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MINCOTUR).
