Brazil is not only a major fruit producer and exporter of tropical fruit, it has an appetite for imported fruit like oranges from Egypt too. This is according to Felipe Silva, head of sales from the exporting and importing company TFruits in Brazil.
“The flagship of TFruits is papaya in partnership with Interfruit since 2017, followed by apple, in partnership with Sanjo since 2019/2020, and limes in partnership with small and medium-sized producers from different regions of Brazil. In addition, the company also operates practically year round in the tropical avocado market, with a very interesting market share. Our papayas are sent mainly to the Netherlands, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal and Spain. Papaya is suffering a lot with inflation in Europe. Competition from Spain’s product that comes along with the concern of carbon footprint that is mainly present in customers who are focused in retail in the north of Europe. Despite this, we have a lot of challenges with the weather conditions which keeps prices under pressure. We hope to see a better second semester for papayas,” states Silva.
Most of the items sold today by TFruits are mainly destined for the European market, with the exception of apples, which is mainly marketed in Asia says Silva: “The company sees the opening of new markets as essential for greater profitability for producers, especially in items such as Hass avocados and limes. Not to mention the risk mitigation that this represents for the producers and the country as a whole.”
TFruits operates with multiple products as it positions itself as the strategic commercial intelligence arm as well as logistical and documentary support for producers. “For 2023, the company's focus is to promote the limes supply chain in the country's various production sites and continue the work of introducing and developing Hass avocado producers in Brazil to become direct exporters in conventional and organic lines. It is still a small project, but the company hopes to grow in the coming years.
"Furthermore, TFruits plans to start finding out partnerships for the production of grapes and mangoes in order to complete the basket of relevant fresh fruits produced by the country. Our hass avocados are focused on the Netherlands and Spain while other markets are being developed. Our tropical avocados are sent mainly to France and Spain. Brazil has a stable spot in the French market of tropical avocados, TFruits has a market share of 30-40% of this Brazilian exports according to the time of the year,” explains Silva.
He says for their limes from Brazil they mainly focus exports in the UK, France and Spain. “After difficult months the market is improving and the forecast its good with summer arriving soon in Europe.”
Tfruits has trialled the import of oranges from Egypt while strongly exploring table grapes and pears for the domestic market of Brazil too. “As for the Brazilian domestic market, TFruits began to look at some specific items as attractive for the development of import and distribution in partnership with companies that already have the sales spots and know-how of the domestic market. In this way, the company is focused on the development of imports of oranges from Egypt, where it has already started a partnership followed by trial containers that received positive feedback from clients, in addition to grapes and pears, for which the sourcing is still under development,” concludes Silva.
