Ron Jongejan, Ibacem Holland:

"First Tommy Atkins mangoes arrive on good market"

The first containers of the season's Tommy Atkins mangoes for Ibacem Holland have arrived at LBP in Maasdijk. "We expect to receive two to three containers every week," says Ron Jongejan, who has been representing the Brazilian mango and grape grower in Europe since this year.

"The mango market is very good and with Easter coming up, demand will only increase in the coming days. Mango prices are at a good level at 6-7 euros. The quality of mangoes also looks good. However, mangoes do fall small this year. Most of the supply will consist of sizes 10 and 12," Ron says.

In addition to the Tommy Atkins range, Ibacem Holland will also receive mangoes of the Palmer variety in the near future. The first Keitt mangoes are not expected until June. Besides the arrivals in Maasdijk, Ibacem also delivers the mangoes needed for the programmes directly to retail customers.

Ron looks back on the start of the sales office in the Netherlands with satisfaction. "Our customers find it very pleasant to speak directly to the source. Besides mangoes, we also supply year-round grapes and for next year we want to expand our range to include avocados, ginger and limes."
