Equifruit is stepping boldly into the Organic Produce Summit 2025 with an eye-opening message: the cost of upgrading to Fairtrade bananas for an entire year is less than that of a single sock.
The company is inviting OPS attendees to learn how the "most expensive banana" is affordable, and visitors can expect an immersive experience that will rock their socks off.
The company points out that switching to Equifruit bananas adds about $5 per year to your grocery bill, which is less than most single socks, let alone a pair. Yet, it funds something far more fashionable: fair pay for banana farmers.
A look at Equifruit's booth from OPS 2024.
"We often get pushback about raising banana prices at retail," says Kim Chackal, co-owner and VP of sales and marketing at Equifruit. "But by the end of the year, upgrading to Fairtrade bananas costs less than a single sock. This might seem like an absurd comparison to make, but we want to shock retailers into realizing how affordable the switch is."
By choosing the company's bananas, retailers and consumers are supporting fair wages for banana farmers, as well as better working conditions and environmentally friendly farming practices. Through the Fairtrade Standard, Equifruit also pays $1 US in Fairtrade Premium for every case of bananas sold, which goes directly to farmers for them to invest in community projects, like better schools, medical care, clean water, and climate resilience projects.
OPS attendees are encouraged to stop by Equifruit's mystery wall, snag a selfie, some swag, and start a conversation about why bananas are so cheap. Find out more at booth #808.
