33 kg cocaine found in fruit shipment to Belgium

The Ministry of Public Security of Costa Rica recently reported the interception of 33 kilograms of cocaine concealed within a container of fresh fruit bound for Belgium. At the APM Terminals Container Terminal in Moín, Limón, Costa Rican authorities discovered the illicit packages in the container's refrigeration compartment.

Minister of Security Mario Zamora stated, "By using the scanner, it was possible to detect 33 kilograms of cocaine that were intended to be sent to the port of Antwerp in Belgium. This action by the police reflects the activation of drug controls in this important Costa Rican export port."

The operation is part of Costa Rica's broader efforts to curb drug smuggling concealed within legitimate exports. Since the initiation of Operation Sovereignty in July 2023, the government has enhanced scanning technology and increased police presence at the Moín Container Terminal.

The preliminary reports suggest a shift in smuggling tactics, with traffickers resorting to smaller cocaine consignments. To date, Costa Rican authorities have confiscated an estimated 13,673 tons of cocaine under this initiative. These controls specifically aim to secure export channels to European destinations.
