The melon campaign in the Mantua area of Lombardy got off to a very positive start, according to Sales Manager Maurizio Carbonini of Op Mantuafruit. Although demand was low during the first three weeks of May, it has increased considerably since the last week of May, with large quantities coming in at high prices. The harvest is currently underway in the local production area.

The Italian market is in turmoil, and orders from large retailers are increasing because higher summer temperatures are leading to greater consumption. Mantova Fruit also exports to other countries, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Availability begins in February with production from Senegal and continues with Sicily, central Italy, and northern Italy.
"Prices are good, slightly higher than in the same period in 2024. We expect prices to remain at these levels throughout June, as full production has not yet been reached everywhere."

"Then, starting in July, we will see how the season goes," Carbonini says. Because of the large quantity of fruit, we expect the products to be available, though the prices may fluctuate compared to now. This is all in addition to circumstances that are unpredictable at the moment. For example, a strong storm hit our territories in recent days, but fortunately, it caused no damage."
Regarding the plain melon market, demand is in line with our plans. We're receiving excellent feedback on the quality, especially for the Tiarè variety, which is growing in popularity due to its visual appeal, organoleptic qualities, and processing. The new packaging dedicated to this product is also contributing to its popularity."

The Mantua fruit producers' organization cultivates approximately 1,150 hectares of melons, ranging from roasted to smooth, with a potential yield of over 30,000 tons. Regarding the brand, the sales manager says, "The Protected Geographical Indication brought us great satisfaction last year. The Melone Mantovano IGP brand is highly regarded by large retailers and markets because consumers respond well to it."
