Spring onions are grown 365 days of the year at Thorndon Park Produce in South Australia. The spring onions are grown on 5 hectares of land.
"The crop we have at the moment is looking okay in the fields, now that we are finished with the crop that was in its early growing stages during the heatwave back in Feb/March," said Anthony De Ieso, from Thorndon Park Produce.
"We have had some storm events which did cause some cosmetic damage to larger spring onions, but it didn't affect the sales of those. However, with the storm comes disease, as the rain was still heavy and the ground was very wet. We decided to sacrifice the affected crop by slashing it, instead of treating or rotary hoeing it."
"Our volumes will depend on interstate supply into Adelaide. We have heavy competition from Victoria, so that will affect our numbers; however, we expect a slightly bigger than normal demand for our crop as this is the time of year when there are shortages due to slower growth periods and wet conditions."
The spring onions are mostly sold through SA Produce Market; however, when there is volume and demand, Anthony supplies across Australia to various interstate customers in places such as Darwin, Sydney, and Brisbane.
"Demand is steady, but has taken a dive over the past two years on spring onions due to more competition interstate. However, we have a steady flow of orders, so we can keep a good flow on planting, picking, and packing our spring onion crop."
