Export deals signed to double China fruit sales by 2034

Zespri has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with four major Chinese partners as part of a plan to double the value of its fruit exports to China over the next decade. The agreements were finalized during New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's trade delegation to China, which included Zespri Board Chair Nathan Flowerday.

The MOUs were signed with distributors Joy Wing Mau and Goodfarmer, as well as retailers Pagoda and Xianfeng Fruit. These four companies account for roughly 80% of Zespri's business in China. Under the agreements, the partners aim to expand fruit sales into 120 cities by the 2033/34 season, up from the current 60.

Zespri CEO Jason Te Brake described China as a key market, citing more than NZD 1.4 billion in annual sales across Greater China and the potential for further growth. He said this season's sales volume in China is expected to increase by over 8% compared to last year.

In addition to market expansion, the agreements include a joint effort to explore more sustainable consumer packaging solutions. The partners also plan to support New Zealand's broader goal of doubling export value by 2035.

As part of the delegation's activities, the group will visit BHG MarketPlace, a Beijing-based high-end supermarket, where Zespri kiwifruit will be featured.
