Higher production for Turkish watermelon season

There's going to be sufficient availability for the Turkish watermelons this season, with the first deliveries being done in the first week of July, says Kerim Taner, executive chairman for Turkish fresh produce exporter Perla Fruit: "This year's watermelon production in Turkey is higher compared to the production of last year. In particular, we expect a good yield for seedless watermelon this season. Our new watermelon sizing machine will be installed at our facility as of June 25, and the very first deliveries are starting from the first week of July."

According to Taner, the prices will be competitive during the peak of the season, when a lot of European clients will order their watermelons. "We will begin shipments to all our customers in European countries, especially to those in Germany and the UK. The months of July and August are the peak production months in our country, and thankfully we expect competitive prices during this period. With the warmer weather, strong demand has already started to emerge, both in the domestic market as well as in European markets."

The plans for this year are set out, but the exporter is already looking towards the next year, as they plan to produce new varieties: "This year, the seedless watermelon varieties that we will be exporting are Style F1 and WDL4304 watermelons. However, next year we will produce new seeded and seedless watermelon varieties, as well as specialty melon varieties preferred by our customers, in collaboration with our contract and GlobalGAP-certified growers," Taner concludes.
