In a move that could directly impact the regional trade of fruits and vegetables, Cambodia's Senate President Hun Sen has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Thailand to reopen all border checkpoints. If Thailand fails to comply, Cambodia will close its side of the border and block the entry of all Thai agricultural goods, including fresh produce, as reported and compiled by PPTV Online.
The announcement, delivered during a special address before the Cambodian Senate on June 16, 2025, stems from frustrations over what Hun Sen described as Thailand's unilateral border restrictions. He emphasised that Cambodia had already considered closing the borders but postponed action after discussions between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Hun Sen specifically warned: "If Thailand cannot open all border checkpoints with Cambodia starting tomorrow, we will ban Thai fruits and vegetables from entering all our border checkpoints." He called for the reopening of crossings from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., the schedule previously in place.
This sharp escalation may significantly affect cross-border trade, particularly Thai fruit exports, which rely heavily on overland routes into Cambodia and further into Vietnam and China. Cambodia's strong language also signals growing impatience with its neighbour, and a refusal to engage in talks until Thai restrictions are lifted.
Hun Sen underscored that "the Thai army is the one who restricted the borders," adding that Cambodia "will not risk our reputation on the mistakes of others."
The coming hours will be crucial for Thai exporters, especially those in the fruit and vegetable sectors, as regional supply chains face potential disruption.
