In 2024, Spain imported 101 million kilos of peppers from Morocco, i.e., 199.9% more than in 2015, according to calculations by trade website Hortoinfo based on ICEX Estacom data. In total, the country imported 109.47 million kilos of peppers, 92.36% of which came from Morocco.
In 2015, Spain imported 33.71 million kilos of peppers from Morocco. The value of these imports in 2024 stood at 121.46 million euros, which equates to an average price of 1.20 euros per kilo.
At the same time, Spanish pepper exports also increased in the last decade, although at a slower pace. In 2024, Spain sold 844.62 million kilos abroad, 20.87% more than in 2015. This volume generated a total income of 1,665.66 million euros, almost double the 870.64 million achieved in 2015. The average export price increased from 1.25 to 1.97 euros per kilo.
Germany was the main destination market for Spanish peppers in 2024, with 295.02 million kilos, equivalent to 34.93% of total exports. That is 29.03% more volume than in 2015. Exports to Germany amounted to 596.7 million euros and an average price of 2.02 euros per kilo.
France followed in second place after purchasing 111.78 million kilos, 10.06% more than in 2015, worth 206.33 million euros, at an average price of 1.85 euros per kilo. The United Kingdom ranked third with 110.21 million kilos imported in 2024, 90.13% more than a decade ago, worth 224.91 million euros and at an average price of 2.04 euros per kilo.
Spain's top three pepper suppliers in 2024 were Morocco, Portugal, and France. In 2024, Spain purchased 2.84 million kilos of peppers from Portugal (+492.7% over 2015) and 2.08 million kilos from France (+32.2% over 2015).
