Salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers prompts recall

A multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections has prompted a recall of whole cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. between April 29, 2025, and May 19, 2025. The outbreak is currently under investigation by the CDC and public health officials across several U.S. states.

As of now, 26 cases of Salmonella infection have been reported across 15 states, with nine individuals requiring hospitalization. No deaths have been reported. The contaminated cucumbers were distributed to stores, restaurants, and other facilities, and may still be within shelf life for the remainder of the week.

According to available data, several infected individuals reported consuming cucumbers while aboard cruise ships departing from Florida. The recalled cucumbers, which are not organic varieties, may have been sold individually or in packages and labeled as "supers," "selects," or "plains."

Epidemiological, laboratory, and traceback evidence have confirmed that cucumbers from Bedner Growers Inc., distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc., are a likely source of the outbreak and may be making people sick.

Where the 26 people in this Salmonella outbreak live

In response, businesses have been advised not to sell or serve any whole cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers and distributed within the affected timeframe. Surfaces and items that may have come into contact with the cucumbers should be washed and sanitized thoroughly. Retailers are encouraged to notify customers who may have purchased the affected products by placing signs in stores or sending email alerts.

The investigation remains open as officials continue to monitor the situation and assess the extent of the outbreak.
