French shoppers spend more on FMCG in latest four weeks: Kantar
French shoppers increased their expenditure on FMCG, foodservice and leisure by 2.1% across major retail stores in the latest four weeks to 20 April, according to Kantar. Supermarkets lost around 228,000 customers, while hypermarkets saw declines in customer numbers, as well as spending per shopping trip, of €0.94.

Global supply constraints for dairy, beef and cocoa continue to drive NZ's food price inflation rate
Foodstuffs NZ Managing Director Chris Quin says prices for dairy, beef and cocoa are still near record levels on global markets, as falling or static supplies can't meet consumer demand. April's price increases were mitigated by a -3.3% average decrease for fruit and veggies in the FPI basket, including year-on-year price falls of -25% for red capsicums and -23% for avocadoes.

East of England Co-op moves closer to zero food waste goal
East of England Co-op said it has moved closer to its goal of eliminating edible food waste by 2030 by working with Retail Insight, provider of in-store execution software. Last year, Retail Insight's AI-powered markdown solution helped the cooperative prevent 1.8mln meals from entering landfill.

UK food group Greencore seals $1.6bln Bakkavor deal
Convenience food manufacturer Greencore said it had agreed to the terms of a recommended acquisition of UK fresh food provider Bakkavor Group, in a deal valued at 1.2bln pounds ($1.59bln). In April, the parties said they had reached an agreement in principle on the key financial terms of a possible cash and share offer by Greencore for Bakkavor.

PAK'nSAVE North Island has once again come out on top in a fresh round of international supermarket price comparisons, confirming that New Zealand's lowest price grocery stores has continued to beat major retailers in Australia and the UK on value. The updated figures, compiled by Foodstuffs North Island, using data provided by NielsenIQ through its Homescan Service, show that for the second month running, PAK'nSAVE delivered the lowest overall basket price in a detailed comparison with five leading supermarket brands - including Woolworths, Aldi, and Tesco. Among the 20 items compared were: Fresh produce and meat: Onions, bananas, carrots, beef mince, chicken breast.

US: Some 3,000 Cub Foods workers reject offer, threaten strike
Workers at Cub Foods, Haug's, and Knowlan's Festival Foods have rejected the latest contract offers from the retailers, and their union has warned of a potential strike, which could involve as many as 2,800 workers at 38 stores in the Minneapolis region, the union said. "The companies' inadequate offers and unlawful conduct has set the union on a path to potential strikes", UFCW Local 663 said.
