Retailer partners with local supplier for Irish-grown parsnips

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has expanded its collaboration with Gilfresh Produce, based in County Armagh, to supply Irish parsnips to M&S stores throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This development highlights M&S's continued support for local agricultural practices.

Gilfresh Produce, established 60 years ago by Thomas Gilpin, operates on 1,800 acres, maintaining its focus on quality. The business began its relationship with M&S in 2010, initially supplying three lines of carrots. This partnership has grown over the years to include ten product lines, such as carrots, swede, broccoli crowns, brussels sprouts, sweetheart cabbage, leeks, and pumpkins, with ongoing product development.

William Gilpin, Managing Director at Gilfresh Produce, stated, "Supplying locally grown parsnips to M&S stores across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is an important next step in our long-standing partnership. Our shared commitment to quality and innovation has been key to making this possible. We are proud to grow produce that not only tastes exceptional but is also farmed in a way that protects and enhances our environment for future generations."

Shaun Doherty, Senior Agronomist at M&S, expressed, "Expanding our partnership with Gilfresh Produce to offer locally grown parsnips across the island of Ireland is an exciting step forward. At M&S, we are passionate about supporting rural economies, championing sustainable farming practices, and delivering the best quality produce to our customers. Importantly, this collaboration exemplifies our dedication to sustainability – by working closely with growers to implement renewable energy solutions and eco-friendly practices, we're not only enhancing produce quality but also contributing to a healthier environment for future generations."

Gilfresh's sustainable practices include utilizing renewable energy from an on-site anaerobic digester to power its operations, thus supporting a circular farming model. Biodiversity initiatives involve creating habitats for native species like barn owls and Irish hares. Furthermore, a collaboration with AgriSound aims to use sensor technology to monitor pollinator activity, aligning with M&S's Farming with Nature programme, which addresses environmental challenges and promotes positive agricultural changes.
