The Alcampo chain (part of the Auchan Retail group) issued a press release last week announcing a number of measures to accompany its transformation plan, including the closure of 25 supermarkets and a reduction in sales area in response to "new consumer trends."
Reducing floor space and renovating outlets
"The retail sector is undergoing a profound transformation," according to the company, with "new consumer trends" tending towards smaller, more practical outlets tailored to consumer needs. In response to these new shopping habits, Alcampo has begun the process of reducing the surface area of 15 of its hypermarkets, as well as renovating and modernizing more than 60 stores.
Closing 25 stores and cutting 710 jobs
In 2023, the company acquired a total of 224 supermarkets "despite the fact that some of them did not fit its model, had an excessive effort rate or their location was undesirable," explains the company, which has taken the decision to close 25 supermarkets in difficulty, affecting 710 employees. Alcampo explains that "it is essential to recover results and ensure sustainable growth in each of the stores."
