Spanish melon exports to the European Union (EU) have decreased by 32.27% since 2019. Exports have declined from a record 409.85 million kilos that year to 277.6 million kilos in 2024, according to a Hortoinfo report based on Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat) data and TARIC code 080719 for fresh or chilled melons.
In 2024, EU member states purchased 808.18 million kilos of melons, which is 24.84% less than in 2019. These transactions amounted to 860.42 million euros, with an average price of 1.06 euros per kilo.
Spain remains the EU's main melon supplier, providing 277.6 million kilos in 2024, holding a 34.56% share, and marking a 32.27% decrease compared to 2019.
Brazil ranked second with 179.32 million kilos sold, securing a 22.19% share, and a 17.57% decrease compared to 2019. The Netherlands ranked third with 107.4 million kilos sold, a 13.29% share, and a 16.87% decrease since 2019. The Netherlands imported 185.81 million kilos, suggesting that its sales are primarily re-exports.
Italy ranked fourth with 43.43 million kilos sold, representing a 69.99% increase compared to 2019. Morocco ranked fifth with 40.51 million kilos sold, which is 11.05% less than in 2019.
Spanish melon sales in the EU in 2024 reached 277.91 million euros, with an average price of 1 euro per kilo. Brazil generated 154.58 million euros, with an average price of 0.86 euros per kilo. The Netherlands achieved 149.58 million euros, with an average price of 1.39 euros per kilo. Morocco sold its melon at 1.43 euros per kilo, the highest price among the main suppliers, which is 43% more expensive than the price of Spanish melons.
