Andrew Smith - Butler Market Gardens

“Growing conditions have been good, but could certainly do with some rain"

Butler Market Gardens, based in Heatherton, Melbourne, specialises in growing vegetables and herbs. In addition to conventional vegetables, Butlers also grows a range of Asian vegetables.

"The acreage varies," said Andrew Smith, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at the company. "It is probably around 50-80 acres at one time, rotating around our farms."

Butler's market gardens have a 12-month supply of Asian vegetables from their farms in Victoria.

"Growing conditions have been good, but could certainly do with some rain," said Andrew. "Our range of Asian vegetables includes, Buk Choi (also called Chinese cabbage), Baby Buk Choi, Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan or Kai Lan), Pak Choi (Shanghai or Bok Choi).

All of these vegetables are sold to the main retail supermarket and independent retailers in Australia. They are packed into sleeves to promote their shelf life.
