The winners of the 2025 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards have been announced, recognizing excellence in packaging design across Australia and New Zealand. Held on May 6 at the Sofitel Sydney Wentworth in New South Wales, Australia, the annual PIDA Awards, coordinated by the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP), celebrate companies and individuals making significant contributions to the packaging industry. These awards serve as a platform to highlight innovation, sustainability, and best practices in packaging design.
The 2025 PIDA Awards featured several categories, including Food Packaging Design, Beverage Packaging Design, Health, Beauty & Wellness Packaging, Domestic & Household Packaging, Labelling & Decoration, and Sustainable Packaging Design. Additional categories recognized excellence in packaging education, such as the ABA Scholarship Program and the AIP President's Award, as well as industry leadership through the Industry Packaging Professional of the Year and AIP Distinguished Service Award.
The PIDA Awards are also the official feeder program for the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Awards, organized by the World Packaging Organisation. Winners of the 2025 PIDA Awards will automatically qualify for entry into the 2026 WorldStar Packaging Awards, providing them with a global stage to showcase their innovative packaging solutions.
In the 2025 Food Packaging Design category, the Gold award was presented to Macro Health Food Box-Bottom Paper Bags, a sustainable packaging solution introduced by Woolworths Food Co. Macro's innovative design replaces traditional soft plastic packaging with a paper-based alternative that is kerbside recyclable. This transition significantly reduces plastic usage, saving an estimated 96 tonnes of plastic annually across 12 million packs. The flat box-bottom stand-up paper bag design not only offers advanced barrier technology to maintain product freshness but also enhances shelf presentation and transportation efficiency.
The Silver award in the Food Packaging Design category went to Australian Organic Food Co. for its Vanilla Custard Mono Material Retort Pouch, developed in collaboration with Flavour Makers and Cheer Pack Asia Pacific. This design prioritizes recyclability without compromising product quality. The Bronze award was awarded to Opal for its paper-based food and fresh produce punnet, offering an eco-friendly alternative to conventional plastic packaging.
High commendations were also given to Gippsland Dairy Crafted Range 150g by Chobani and KFC Go Bucket Paper Lid by KFC Australia and Detpak, further highlighting the diverse range of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions recognized at the 2025 PIDA Awards.
These awards underscore the continued evolution of packaging design, where sustainability and functionality are at the forefront of industry advancements. The winning entries demonstrate how packaging can reduce environmental impact while maintaining product quality and meeting consumer expectations.
