Malawi and Tanzania strengthen trade ties despite restrictions

Malawi and Tanzania have reiterated their intent to bolster bilateral trade ties during a Joint Ministerial meeting in Dodoma, Tanzania. The gathering, detailed in a communique by Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Tanzania's Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Nancy Gladys Tembo, Malawi's Foreign Affairs Minister, aimed at enhancing economic collaboration and identifying opportunities for mutual gain.

The meeting's objective was to discuss the Control of Goods (Import and Export) (Commerce) (Prohibition) Order, enacted on March 13, 2025, by Malawi, which restricted certain imports. The communique stated, "The discussions underscored the shared commitment to deepen trade relations, foster economic cooperation, and address existing trade matters."

Both ministers acknowledged the robust bilateral ties and stressed the importance of adhering to regional and international frameworks for trade cooperation. They agreed to improve trade relations through enhanced management of imports and exports.

The communique noted Malawi's appreciation for Tanzania lifting the Prohibition Notice on Importation of Plant and Plant Products from Malawi, dated April 23, 2025. In response, Malawi committed to issuing an Administrative Instrument to facilitate trade with Tanzania.

The ministers also highlighted the longstanding historical and friendly relations between the nations, commending their respective presidents for leadership in bilateral and regional cooperation. The delegations agreed to implement the meeting's outcomes for mutual benefit, acknowledging recent trade disruptions due to agricultural export and import restrictions.
