California walnut growers are experiencing an excellent start to the 2025 growing season, with early indicators pointing to a strong crop, according to industry experts monitoring orchards across the state.
Following three consecutive years of average to above-average rainfall and substantial snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains, walnut orchards are beginning the season with adequate surface water and well-replenished soil. These favorable conditions, combined with ideal spring temperatures, have fostered a robust bloom and strong early shoot development.
"Things are shaping up to be a tremendously good start to California's walnut growing season," said Davin Norene, owner of Big Time Farming and a walnut growing specialist. "We are predicting good things ahead of this year's crop."
Bud break in early walnut varieties began in mid-April, and all varieties, including Chandler, are now exhibiting vigorous shoot growth throughout California's key growing regions. This early stage is crucial for setting the foundation for healthy nut development over the coming months.
Robert Verloop, executive director and CEO of the California Walnut Board & Commission, noted that this season's promising start is a welcome change after several challenging years. "The exceptional start to this growing season is a welcome and energizing reprieve after navigating a series of tough seasons that demonstrated the resilience and adaptability of California's walnut industry," he said. "This spring, growers are well-positioned to capitalize on ideal soil moisture and perfect temperatures, setting the stage for strong yield and quality in the 2025 crop."
