Pineapple prices fall in Kerala after seasonal rains

The Pineapple Growers Association in Kerala, India, reports a sharp decline in pineapple prices following the onset of mango showers. Over the past 20 days, prices for ripe, raw, and special raw pineapples have dropped by approximately $0.31.

Currently, ripe pineapples are priced at $0.33, raw at $0.29, and special raw at $0.31 per kilogram. According to data from the Merchants Association on Saturday, prices were $0.29 for ripe and raw pineapples, and $0.31 for special raw levels last seen in 2021. Initial projections had expected prices to reach $0.72, but the rains disrupted this upward trend.

Farmers have reported a 50% increase in production, leading to oversupply and contributing to the decline in prices. In 2021, the price per kilogram was $0.33, which rose to over $0.78 last year. This recent drop has encouraged many farmers to focus on pineapple cultivation for potentially better returns despite the price fluctuations.

Despite the fall in prices, demand remains steady, particularly during the wedding season. This situation presents an opportunity for farmers and traders to highlight value-added pineapple products. Some are also storing pineapples ahead of further rainfall, hoping to sell them at higher prices later to reduce potential losses. This strategy allows them to take advantage of stable demand even amid short-term price dips.
