The National Farmers' Federation (NFF) highlights the challenges faced by the agriculture sector in Australia due to complex labour laws and red tape, impacting food security and farm viability. NFF President David Jochinke emphasizes the urgency of workforce access for farmers, stating, "We're calling on all political leaders to understand that without a reliable farm workforce, our ability to produce affordable, high-quality food and fibre is under direct threat."
Labour shortages are leading to unharvested crops, reduced business opportunities, and scaled-back production. Mr. Jochinke points out that staff costs constitute a substantial portion of farm expenses, and access to workers can determine the success of a farming season. He advocates for a streamlined system that supports farmers rather than hindering them.
On the domestic front, farmers face complex Industrial Relations laws. Mr. Jochinke calls for a review, suggesting potential productivity gains through adjustments. He notes, "Small and family-run farms are struggling to navigate confusing rhetoric on pay rates, overtime, worker classification, compliance with fair work statutory regimes, and more." The NFF proposes extending the AgCAREERSTART program and establishing an Agriculture Trade Apprenticeship to strengthen the domestic workforce.
For overseas workforce needs, Mr. Jochinke stresses the importance of secure pathways. Immediate actions include fixing the PALM scheme, improving the skilled visa system, and maintaining the Working Holiday Maker visa. He supports the introduction of a dedicated farm visa and notes the Coalition's commitment to this initiative. The NFF urges political parties to ensure migration cuts do not affect agriculture, emphasizing the importance of a viable workforce for stable food prices.
