Iran's Agriculture Minister announced the country's intention to enhance relations with BRICS members, following its active role in the 15th BRICS Agriculture Ministers Meeting. Iran's proposals were endorsed by all member states and incorporated into the summit's final declaration.
The Iranian delegation proposed initiatives, including a sub-working group on fisheries, a union of agricultural research institutes, and a vaccine producers' consortium. The delegation also advocated for increased financial cooperation, investment, and trade among BRICS countries.
Bilateral discussions with Brazil and India focused on expanding Iranian exports such as caviar, pomegranates, apples, kiwis, and dried fruits to Brazil. Both parties agreed to address export barriers and develop necessary protocols.
The minister noted Iran's progress toward self-sufficiency in meat production but highlighted the potential use of Brazil's infrastructure for exporting halal meat to Muslim countries. Efforts are underway to enhance exports of livestock and poultry products, while continuing imports of animal feed ingredients like corn, soybeans, and oil.
During the visit, the Iranian delegation toured the Port of Santos, where Iran's trade accounts for about seven percent of the port's annual capacity. Discussions with Santos officials indicated a willingness to collaborate on establishing a dedicated terminal and joint investment projects.
Meetings with Iranian businesspeople in Brazil and international agricultural companies were also held, aimed at fostering future economic and trade engagement.
