DMS Avocados hits record 405,000 trays

With the completion of another export season, the DMS Avocado Division has reported packing a record number of export trays for the 2024/2025 cycle. The business manager of DMS Avocados, Hamish McKain, highlighted the team's performance, stating, "A solid performance of the entire team, dedication of all our harvest contractors, offshore quality holding up respectively well, and Mother Nature holding good weather for most of the season, all of this made the perfect combination for a positive outcome." Achieving the milestone of 405,000 Class One trays packed was noted as a notable achievement.

Despite the success, McKain acknowledged challenges, particularly the detection of a leaf roller at the Australian border. He emphasized the importance of teamwork, the commitment of growers, and the support from exporter AVOCO in mitigating risks before shipment. The installation of a new water blaster by DMS provided additional pest control measures during production.

McKain also mentioned DMS's role as a platinum main stage sponsor for the Katikati Avocado Food and Wine Festival in January 2025, reflecting their support for the local community. The festival attracted attendees from the Bay of Plenty and beyond, offering live music, food, and drinks, creating a vibrant atmosphere. McKain noted the importance of community engagement, stating, "Putting that into reality within the community and following one of our six main company core values that we live by - 'Our people's wellbeing' - focusing on the wellbeing of your people and fostering a sense of togetherness, really makes me believe that this can make a difference in how a team or company thrives."

The avocado season has been described as busy and demanding, with operations continuing for local markets. McKain remarked, "For sure, this will be the DMS's biggest avocado season yet." He addressed industry challenges, emphasizing collaboration and continuous improvement as key to driving forward with a shared vision.
