Five unions - CFTC, CGT, CFDT, FO-FGTA, and SNCDD CFE-CGC - have called an indefinite strike at Lidl France from Friday, February 7th. The unions are asking for a pay rise, improved working conditions, and opposition to the plan to open Lidl stores on Sundays.
According to the unions, the strike is affecting 250 to 350 of the 1,580 shops in France, and has disrupted around 20 warehouses, "3 or 4 of which are completely closed."
Picket lines have been set up in several towns in front of the stores and warehouses to prevent shelves from being stocked.
According to a delegate from CFDT France interviewed by BFM radio, "approximately 150 stores were completely closed all day on February 7th," while 100 to 200 stores were closed for some hours on that day. As for the number of strikers, the figures vary between 2,500 and 5,000.
