Potato prices in Bishkek rise to $0.74 per kg as Kyrgyzstan considers export restrictions

During a parliamentary session, MP Eldar Abakirov highlighted that potato prices in Bishkek have surged to $0.68-$0.74 per kilogram. He stated, "We grow potatoes in large areas — in Issyk-Kul region, Alai, Chon-Alai, and Kochkor. We are happy for the farmers, but $0.74 per kilogram is a high price for the population. If a bag of flour costs $19.45, then a bag of potatoes costs $28.60-$34.30." The MP urged the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry to update MPs on preparations for the arable season and outline future plans to prevent such price hikes.

Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture suggested a temporary restriction on potato exports, asserting that Kyrgyzstan has sufficient stockpiles. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan imposed a six-month ban on potato exports to non-EAEU countries in January, aiming to stabilize domestic prices amid rising demand from neighbors like Uzbekistan.
