In Vietnam, durian growers have reported substantial earnings due to increased yields and rising market prices. A farmer from Can Tho City in the Mekong Delta noted profits exceeding $41,000, attributing success to modern agricultural techniques such as periodic fertilization, biological pest control, and automated drip irrigation, which have enhanced both output and quality.
In Dong Thap Province, Thanh Tam shared similar results from his 1.2-hectare durian orchard using advanced farming methods. Nguyen Van Man, director of Tien Giang's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated that a hectare of durian can generate approximately $69,500 annually. This profitability has encouraged a shift toward durian cultivation in the region.
Vu Duc Con, president of the Dak Lak Durian Association, highlighted that durian farming has provided substantial income for local households, with some earning between $12,200 and $20,400 per year. Dak Lak, a major durian-producing province, has approximately 33,000 hectares dedicated to durian, yielding an annual output of 350,000 tons. Con noted that the transition to durian farming has significantly improved local livelihoods, enabling many families to purchase cars and build new homes.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam's agricultural, forestry, and fishery exports reached $62.4 billion last year. Fruits and vegetables led with $7.2 billion in exports, with durian alone contributing $3.3 billion. This growth is attributed to technological advancements in cultivation and preservation, alongside cooperative efforts among growers, exporters, and authorities.
