Carrefour, Consum, Aldi, and Lidl opened the most stores last year

According to the 'Consumer Trends in 2024' report prepared by the consultancy NIQ, Mercadona has reaffirmed its leadership in Spain's food distribution sector, reaching a market share of 29.5% in 2024, despite having closed 18 stores. Carrefour and Lidl ranked second and third with a 7.4% and 6.7% share, respectively, followed by DIA, Eroski, Consum, Alcampo, and Aldi.

The report highlights the growth of Consum and Aldi, and the importance of regional supermarkets, which account for one out of every four euros spent on large-scale consumer goods. Carrefour, Consum, Aldi, and Lidl have significantly expanded their retail network, while El Corte Inglés and DIA reduced the number of their establishments.

E-commerce has experienced significant growth, with an 18% increase in spending, far surpassing supermarkets and other physical channels. The e-commerce market share has reached 6.8%, with pet, baby, and personal care products leading this segment.

This growth is attributed to the increases in shopping frequencies, the size of the online shopping baskets, and the average expenditure per household. According to Patricia Daimiel, NIQ's managing director for Iberia, innovation in manufacturer brands is key to maintaining relevance in a competitive market, suggesting a positive outlook for e-commerce in 2025.
