In addition to its well-known tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, the southern Spanish province of Almeria also supplies Europe with produce grown outdoors. At this time of the year, lettuce has a special value, especially after the culinary extravagances around the holidays.
Despite the water shortages in the east of the province, places such as Pulpí and Huércal Overa have become important lettuce export hubs for European destinations. The weather and a high number of hours of sunshine in the region are ideal for growing this vegetable.
According to EFE, Almeria accounts for 70% of European lettuce production in January. The province has 6,465 hectares of outdoor cultivation, which represents 65% of the area for this crop in Andalusia, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Junta de Andalucía.
Last season, Almeria produced 186,375 tons of lettuce worth 187 million euros (at origin) and 215 million euros (in the market).
In 2023, the province produced 143,498 tons, accounting for 18% of the national total. In 2024, this figure was far exceeded, with a harvest of 186,375 tons.
