UK potato growers to gain control with new FIX data platform launching in 2025

At the recent Association of Independent Crop Consultants (AICC) technical conference, a novel data management platform was unveiled, and developed by TEAM Ag UK in partnership with AICC. This platform is designed to address the unique challenges faced by potato growers in the UK, particularly the asymmetrical markets that limit their access to data and information compared to larger entities. This situation often leads to imbalances and potential exploitation in critical areas such as agronomic decision-making, input purchasing, crop marketing, and capturing value from non-food-producing activities.

TEAM Ag UK's co-founder and CEO, Kiryon Skippen, highlighted the limitations of current Farm Management Information Software (FMIS), which typically requires growers to share sensitive data with the software providers. A legal review conducted by TEAM Ag on the terms and conditions of existing platforms that manage farm data uncovered numerous clauses that are unfavorable to farmers. Skippen emphasizes the importance of growers setting their own terms for how their data is utilized, advocating for a reciprocal relationship between data providers and users.

The FIX platform, developed by TEAM Ag, aims to embody three core principles: farmer control over data access and fair value distribution, promotion of unbiased and scientifically verified best practices, and facilitation of collaboration among science, agronomy, and growing communities to spur innovation. The platform's design was guided by input from AICC focus group agronomists and investor farmers, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of its users.

Anticipated to launch in the second half of 2025, FIX is in the consultation phase to refine its initial features based on user feedback. AICC CEO Sarah Cowlrick and Essex-based agronomist and AICC Chairman Andrew Blazey, both underscore the platform's commitment to independence, data security, and its potential to serve the industry's need for a robust and future-proof system.
